The Hartwick Hawks football team hosted Western Connecticut in Wright Stadium on September 5 for the season opener.

Senior quarterback John Garcia had an exciting game in the pocket with 24 completed passes, 422 yards in the air and five touchdowns. Although John had a field day against the opposing Connecticut Colonials, the most valuable player of the game was sophomore wide receiver Brad Garcia, John’s younger brother.

Brad Garcia’s spectacular first game of the season consisted of three touchdowns in the first half and then another in the second. He also had 12 receptions for 245 yards. Garcia leads the nation in most receiving yards for the first week and made the Division 3 National Team of the week according to D3Football.com.

The Garcia brothers have built up this chemistry since high school, where they played together for the Warwick Wildcats. The Garcia brothers took the game into their hands for an exciting 34-23 win over Western Connecticut to make them 1-0.

Brad spoke on his excitement for the year: “It felt awesome to get off to a 1-0 start and it means the world to me to be playing with my brother in his last season of football.”
