Being A HOP Host

02.28.18

Olivia Roth

The Hartwick Overnight Program (HOP) is offered twice every February, and March for high school students accepted into Hartwick College. This program allows the current students of Hartwick College, from freshman to seniors, to introduce prospective students to the ins and outs of the campus. These HOP students can join you at the commons, to a class or two, and other events on campus. It gives them an excellent opportunity to socialize with other HOPs and Hartwick students and make connections and friendships that could last well into the prospect students first year at Hartwick College, if this is the college they so choose. If this description of what a HOP host can offer to prospect students does not bring about your interest, here are ten reasons as to why you should sign up to be a HOP host this year!

1.      Allows you to help someone make an important and life changing decision, AKA which college to attend!

2.      Gives you the opportunity to share a personal perspective of Hartwick College.

3.      Let’s you introduce your HOP student to your friends and other HOP students with the same major.

4.      Provides an opportunity to provide real advice to prospect students that could apply to any college they choose, such as: some nights a pile up of assignments can prevent sleeping any time before 2am!

5.      Offers a chance to truly express what your likes and dislikes of the campus are.

6.      Extends an offer to your HOP student as someone to talk to about college decisions as you, yourself, have been through the confusing and weird transition from high school to college.

7.      Allows for an opportunity to provide a wonderful experience to a prospective student so they can get a good feeling about the campus and the programs it offers.

8.      Gives a chance to provide tips and tricks for class schedules and major and minor choosing, such as avoid 8am's if you are not a morning person!

9.      Let’s you provide an atmosphere and experience that allows the prospect student to truly gage if Hartwick College is a place for them.

10.  Simply put, being a HOP host gives you a chance to share your Hartwick College experience thus far to an individual who may or may not have Hartwick College as a number one school choice, leaving you as an individual to help sway their decision in a good and positive manner!
